As a Backend Software Engineer on the Advertising Solutions team, you’ll work directly with our Product teams to build and scale services and features to enhance the Homeowner experience on Houzz and help them connect with home design and remodeling professionals. We are looking for someone who is self-directed, independent, and has experience owning complete products and features. Our tech stack includes React, Node, GraphQL, Java, Python, AWS, GitHub, Jenkins, Kubernetes, MySQL, Lucene/Solr, Redis, Kafka, Docker and more. Your work will directly impact millions of users around the world. This is a unique opportunity to work in a start-up environment with the backing of a larger organization.

What You’ll Do

• Take high level ideas and transforming them into live products, used by millions of homeowners and professionals from around the world
• Work on the backend systems and infrastructure that powers the Advertising Solutions applications.
• Develop and maintain specifications and designs for complex applications, and optimize for maximum speed and scalability.
• Take full ownership of features. Work based on best practices and business priorities while collaborating with other teams to make a big impact on our product.
• Implement and test your code with unit and integration tests, and contribute to our automation infrastructure.
• Work cross-functionally across engineering, product, design teams and operational teams.

At a Minimum, We’d Like You to Have

• Solid coding skills in at least one of the common languages, good understanding of distributed system, algorithms and web services
• Proficiency in web stack programming, from schema design to building user-facing interfaces
• An ability to work on fast paced, data-driven projects
• B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in Computer Science or equivalent
• 1+ years of engineering experience

Ideally, You'll Also Have

• Independence, self-direction and experience owning complete products and features
• Experience developing consumer facing features for millions of consumers
• Comfort working on fast paced, data-driven projects
• 3+ years of engineering experience
• Experience designing web application APIs
• Experience with any backend programming languages (e.g. PHP, Java, Python)
• Experience with relational databases (e.g. MySQL, PostgreSQL) or NoSQL databases & data stores (e.g. Redis, Cassandra)
• Experience with automation testing frameworks such as Cypress and Selenium
• Experience with CI platforms such as GitHub Actions and Jenkins
• Experience with monitoring platforms such as Pingdom, Grafana, Prometheus, Bosun and TSDB
• Experience participating in an on-call rotation
• Experience with AWS and Kubernetes deployments
